Banana slug (c) Thrasher Termite & Pest Control

Meet the Big Bird of gastropods: the enormous, bright yellow banana slug! In our book, banana slugs are the ONLY likeable slugs, plus the kids in us apappreciate their incredible ewwww factor. Yes, we’re in the business of getting rid of garden slugs and snails, but we leave banana slugs alone and you should too. First of all, these critters are strictly decomposers–they don’t eat growing plants. Second, they are the second-largest species of terrestrial slug in the world, and are YELLOW–super, bright yellow! Finally, they’re uncommon. Unless you’re lucky enough to live in a North America coastal rainforest, you’ll never find one in your yard. All these things make the banana slug the most beloved slug in the world.

Want proof? books and songs have been written about banana slugs, there is a band named after them, they are a college sport mascot, and there is a festival dedicated to them.

Mascot of University of California, Santa Cruz

UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs

When Santa Cruz joined NCAA’s Division III in 1981, athletic officials presented the school with its first official mascot: the sea lion. But the students were having none of it; they wanted to be called the banana slugs. After five years of slug vs. sea lion rivalry, the slug won out and it has been the official mascot ever since.

Celebrate all that is slimy and silly about the Pacific Northwest’s most valuable and misunderstood mollusk: the yellow-greenish banana slug. Join us for slug-themed games, crafts, and presentations!

Banana Slug String Band

The band is a group of lovable musicians, songwriters, and educators who blend music, theater, puppetry, and audience participation to create a lively learning environment.

The Banana Slug Song Lyrics

(Sung to the tune of “Twist and Shout”)

By Steve Van Zandt and the Banana Slug String Band

You know I love my baby, …(love my baby)
Love the way she hugs. …(way she hugs)
But people don’t understand it, …(don’t understand it)
She’s a banana slug …(banana slug)

Ba na na slug
Banana slug – Ba-na-na-na-na-na-na
Banana slug – Ba-na-na-na-na-na-na
Banana slug – Ba-na-na-na-na-na-na
Banana slug

She just got one foot,
She ain’t got no toes.
She hangs out in the forest,
To help it decompose.

The way she wiggles her antenna,
You know it gives me such bliss.
C’mon, c’mon, c’mon banana slug,
won’t you give me a kiss.

The way she slides through the forest,
You know she looks so fine.
C’mon, c’mon banana slug,
Won’t you take off your slime.

Some folks say that she’s gross,
But I won’t hear that jive.
‘Cause without my baby,
The forest might not survive.
