Different Kinds of Termites = Different Types of Treatments
Drywood termites and subterranean termites are the two most prevalent species of termites found in California homes–Thrasher Termite & Pest Control uses different termite extermination treatments based on the habits and biology of each termite species.
A drywood termite colony lives entirely in the wood. They need no contact with soil and colonize rafters as easily as doorposts. A single structure is typically host to multiple drywood termite colonies. Fumigation is the preferred method of eliminating drywood termites. An underground chemical barrier will not eliminate a drywood termite colony.
Subterranean termites nest 4 inches to 18 inches below ground. Subterranean termite nests contain many rooms, called galleries, and are connected by tunnels that run between the galleries. In total, a subterranean termite nest can have a radius of 165 to 340 feet. They construct mud tubes across hard objects (such as concrete footings) in order to gain access to a structure. The preferred method for control is placement of a chemical barrier underground, around the perimeter of the structure. Fumigation will not eliminate a subterranean termite colony.
