All About Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are prevalent in all the area served by Thrasher Termite: Santa Clara County, Southern San Mateo County, and Fremont. Drywood termites live deep inside wood and are rarely visible. Roughly twice per year, drywood termites swarm looking for a new place to call home. Because of the difficulty in detecting drywood termites and determining the extent of the damage done, do-it-yourself treatments are not recommended.

Termite colonies are made up of a queen, soldiers and workers. The termite queen is tended to and the colony is built and maintained by the soldiers and workers. Drywood termites prefer temperatures above 120 F which makes attics most susceptible to infestation.

Drywood Termite Identification

The presence of drywood termites is often identified by fecal pellets and the damage they leave behind.

Pellets/Frass/Droppings

Drywood termite pellets are a tell-tale sign of activity. Piles of fecal matter (digested wood) may appear throughout infested areas.Drywood Termite Droppings Comparison

Damage

Drywood Termite DamageDrywood termite damage is below the surface of the wood and consisted of long channels (galleries) of hollowed out wood. This damage effects the structural integrity of wood members.

Swarmers

Drywood Termites ReproductivesDuring the swarming phase, drywood termite reproductives exit the colony in large numbers. They have dark brown bodies with black smoky wings, and reddish brown heads and thorax.

Soldiers & Workers

Drywood Termites eat 24-hours a day

Soft bodied soldier and worker termites are rarely seen unless wood is removed, such as during a construction project.

Local Treatment

Local treatment is when one specific area or several specific areas are treated for the control of drywood termites. While this method is effective and sometimes might be the only choice, it provides termite control at only the areas that are known to be infested with drywood termites. When we find drywood termite activity at one unit in a condominium complex this is typically the preferred method of treatment. There are also many homeowners that don’t want to go through the fumigation process and a localized treatment may be a better choice for them. We have had great success with our localized treatment methods and our call back rate is extremely low. We are in and out of your house in one day with little disruption.
