About Rats
Rats eat and contaminate food, damage buildings and other property by their gnawing and burrowing, and spread diseases that affect people and pets. The presence of rats can be detected by droppings or evidence of fresh gnawing. Rat tracks are seen on dusty surfaces and mud. Rat runways and burrows are found next to buildings, along fences and utility wires, and under low plants and wood piles.
Rats will eat nearly any type of food, but they prefer high-quality foods such as meat, fresh grain, and garden produce. Rats require 1/2 to 1 oz of fluid water daily when feeding on dry food. Rats have keen taste, hearing, and sense of smell. They will climb to find food or shelter, and they can gain entrance to a building throug any opening larger than 1/2 inch across. They can chew through plastic, wire, aluminum, stucco, caulk, expandable foam, and many other materials.
