Drywood Termites and Subterranean Termites Require Different Solutions

Drywood termite colonies lives entirely within wood. They colonize rafters as easily as doorposts. Drywood termites need no contact with soil and survive on the very small amount of residual moisture in structural wood. A single home is typically host to multiple, unconnected drywood termite colonies. Structural Fumigation with Vikane® gas fumigant is the preferred method of eliminating drywood termite colonies–those easily found and those hidden deep within the structure. An underground chemical barrier will not eliminate a drywood termite colony.

Subterranean termites nest 4 inches to 18 inches below ground. Subterranean termite nests contain many rooms, called galleries, and are connected by tunnels that run between the galleries. In total, a subterranean termite nest can have a radius of 165 to 340 feet. They construct mud tubes across hard objects (such as concrete footings) in order to gain access to a structure. The preferred method for control is placement of a chemical barrier underground, around the perimeter of the structure. Fumigation will not eliminate a subterranean termite colony.

Termite Inspection

All termite services begin with an inspection by a licensed, experienced inspector, followed by a written report. Our inspector will note wood destroying organisms: drywood termites, subterranean termites, dampwood termites, fungus/dryrot, wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants, carpenter bees.

The report includes a list of damage found, recommendations for treatment and repair, and recommendations for preventing conditions that make your home vulnerable to wood-destroyers.

When structural fumigation with Vikane® gas fumigant or (also called “tenting”) is recommended, we’ll guide you step-by-step though the process to reduce the impact on your family.
